2023 Grant Focus

Oscar’s 2023 CCC Grant Program is seeking to support organizations serving Hispanic/Latino communities1 & rural communities. These communities, along with many other marginalized communities in the United States, statistically experience high barriers to accessing care.

Hispanic/Latino Communities Image

Hispanic/Latino Communities1

Oscar is proud to serve a diverse member population. In fact, in 2022, 30% of Oscar’s members were Spanish speakers and opted to receive their member materials in Spanish. We speak to our members in a way that’s authentic, respectful, and accessible so that we can help members better understand and navigate a complex system that’s primarily English-first.

Language barriers can cause disparities in health access and outcomes: for example, 33% of Spanish speakers report problems with physician communications. Hispanic/Latinos & Spanish speakers also experience 30-40% worse health outcomes than White individuals, and are more than twice as likely as their White counterparts to be uninsured.2

Rural Communities Image

Rural Communities

Limited care access can also be seen in rural communities who typically have significantly less access to healthcare services than their urban counterparts. Approximately 20% of the American population resides in rural areas, yet less than 10% of US healthcare resources are located there.3

We encourage organizations who feel they are placed to address these, and other systemic barriers for these communities, to submit a grant application.

It is important to note that while we collectively reference “Hispanic/Latino Communities” One cannot address the Hispanic/Latino cohort through a “one size fits all” approach. There is deep and meaningful intracohort diversity (e.g. Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Venezuelan, Guatemalans, Salvadorean, etc.) among this particular community.
